Gaia Thalassitis Assyrtiko Santorini 2022
Ktima Gerovassiliou is the creation of Evangelos Gerovassiliou, who revived the almost-extinct Malagousia variety in 1981. The winery is surrounded by 100 hectares of meticulously maintained, certified sustainable vineyards on the slopes of Epanomi. Renowned for producing consistently high-quality wines of international acclaim, Ktima Gerovassiliou’s Malagousia remains the benchmark for this aromatic Greek variety. Vineyard The vineyard is a single, private site, cultivated with great care, blending tradition with modern viticultural techniques. The Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot summers, is tempered by cooling sea breezes. The vineyard lies three kilometres from the sea, with its western aspect facing the Thermaic Gulf, Mount Olympus, and the beaches of Pieria. Soils are predominantly sandy with patches of clay and calcareous rock, enriched with fossilised sea deposits. This terroir contributes to the wine’s mineral intensity and precise aromatic character. Winemaking Grapes were gently macerated on their skins to extract aromatic intensity and flavour complexity. The must underwent static settling, with the majority fermented in stainless steel at 18–20°C to preserve freshness, while 20% was vinified in seasoned French oak to add subtle structure. The wine was matured on its lees for approximately two months with regular bâtonnage, imparting additional texture and complexity, before clarification by gravity and careful bottling. Tasting Notes This vibrant Malagousia exhibits expressive aromas of white pear, peach, jasmine, and lemon zest, with delicate floral undertones. The palate is opulent and harmonious, showing a fresh, mouthwatering quality, balanced by a gentle spice and flinty mineral character. The wine finishes with elegance, clarity, and a refreshing, lingering acidity, making it perfect with grilled fish, seafood, or light Mediterranean dishes. Grape Variety 100% Malagousia
