KWV The Mentors Petit Verdot 2019
KWV The Mentors Petit Verdot is a concentrated and elegant red wine from Stellenbosch, showing the full expression of this bold varietal. The nose is perfumed with cranberries, sweet spice, black olives, and a hint of aniseed. On the palate, rich plums and dark cherries mingle with well-integrated grippy tannins, leading to a long, intense, and lasting finish. Why You'll Love It This is a rare opportunity to experience 100% Petit Verdot, a grape typically used in small amounts in Bordeaux blends. KWV's meticulous approach includes hand-harvesting, careful sorting, and 18 months of ageing in French oak barrels (70% first-fill), creating a wine of remarkable concentration and elegance. The result is a bold, structured wine with exceptional depth and complexity that showcases the unique character of Stellenbosch terroir. Silver medal winner at the International Wine Challenge. Meet the Producer KWV is a leading South African winery known for producing terroir-driven wines that showcase the unique character of Stellenbosch. The Mentors series highlights the winery's finest varietals, crafted with precision and care to achieve expressive and structured wines. Production Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and meticulously sorted in the cellar. After two days of cold maceration, the juice is inoculated with a selected yeast strain. Fermentation lasts approximately six days, with regular pump-overs to extract colour, flavour, and structure. The wine is racked off the skins, settled, and transferred to barrels for malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 70% of which are first-fill. During this period, the wine is carefully racked twice to ensure clarity and balance, producing a polished and harmonious finish. Tasting Notes Intense ruby in colour, the wine opens with aromas of cranberries, sweet spice, black olives, and aniseed. The palate is rich and juicy, with dark cherries, plums, and well-integrated tannins, culminating i
Marchesi di Gresy Monferrato Rosso 2019
Marchesi di Gresy Monferrato Rosso is a remarkable 100% Merlot from Piedmont — a grape variety more associated with Bordeaux than Barbera country, but one that has found an exceptional home in the commune of Cassine in the Asto zone. Originally planted to blend with Barbera, winemaker Alberto decided the juice was simply too good to blend, and bottled it as a single varietal. Aged for 12 months in used French barriques followed by a further 24 months in Slovenian oak casks, this is a spicy, rich wine with forest fruits and plums on the nose, dark fruits, toasty cedar, and vanilla on the palate, with ripe tannins leading to a long, structured finish. Why You'll Love It This is 100% Merlot from Marchesi di Gresy, one of Piedmont's most respected estates, produced under the DOC Monferrato appellation from vineyards in the commune of Cassine in the Asto zone. The decision to bottle this as a single varietal rather than blending it with Barbera speaks to the exceptional quality of the fruit from this site. The extended oak ageing programme — 12 months in used French barriques followed by 24 months in Slovenian oak casks, totalling three years of maturation — develops extraordinary complexity and structure while allowing the Merlot's natural richness and fruit character to shine through. Winemaker Matteo Sasso oversees production, crafting a wine that is vegetarian and vegan-friendly. This is Piedmontese Merlot with depth, complexity, and genuine ageing ambition.
