Vitola is a beautifully expressive Rioja Reserva that captures both the tradition and modernity of Miguel Merino’s artisanal approach. Deeply aromatic, it opens with ripe red and black fruit layered with notes of cloves, black pepper, and warm spice. On the palate, flavours of tobacco, liquorice, and roasted coffee unfold with freshness and intensity. The structure is elegant yet powerful, finishing long and well-balanced.

Meet the Producer

Bodega Miguel Merino is one of the smallest wineries in Rioja, founded in 1994 by Miguel Merino Sr. after a long career exporting Spanish wines. Located in the historic village of Briones in Rioja Alta, the estate draws from a mosaic of 34 vineyard parcels, some planted over a century ago. With just 13 hectares under vine and an average of 55,000kg harvested annually, production is deliberately small-scale. Under the guidance of Miguel Merino Jr., the bodega has earned international recognition, recently being elevated to Rioja First Growth status in Tim Atkin’s classification. Sustainability is central to their philosophy: no herbicides are used, most work is carried out by hand, and the old vines are carefully preserved to produce wines of depth and authenticity.

Production

Vitola Reserva is crafted from Tempranillo and Graciano grown in old-vine plots around Briones, where the poor soils and cool climate of Rioja Alta impart freshness and balance. Traditional winemaking meets modern precision: careful fermentation is followed by barrel ageing in a mix of French and American oak, enhancing complexity and subtle spicing without overwhelming the fruit.

Tasting Notes

Brimming with ripe red and black fruit aromas, supported by hints of cloves, black pepper, and sweet spice. Tobacco leaf, liquorice, and roasted coffee come through on the palate, framed by velvety tannins and refreshing acidity. Fresh, intense, and persistent, with an elegant, harmonious finish.
