Sub Aqua Club Field Blend 2024 is an intriguing and aromatic orange wine that showcases the creative spirit of the Barossa Valley. Crafted from a predominantly Viognier vineyard with a touch of Riesling accidentally planted alongside it, this unusual field blend has blossomed into a beautifully textural and expressive wine. The vines are dry-grown in the remote Moppa Springs sub-region, with grapes hand-harvested before sunrise to preserve freshness and aromatics. Whole berries are gently fermented on their skins with indigenous yeasts, producing a wine that is rich yet finely grained, vibrant yet subtle, and with a stunningly silky mouthfeel. Aged carefully in neutral French oak, this orange wine balances the bright, marmalade-hued fruit of Viognier with the zesty lift of Riesling, resulting in a wine of elegance, complexity, and sheer individuality that is quintessentially Barossa. Meet the producer Smalltown Vineyards explore the finest vineyards across the Barossa’s prized districts, including Gomersal, Kalimna, and Eden Valley. They embrace minimal intervention winemaking to highlight the unique expression of each site and varietal. Production Grapes are harvested before sunrise, whole berries are fermented on skins in open-top fermenters with indigenous yeasts, and the cap is plunged 2–3 times daily. After 5–7 days on the skins, the wine is pressed and racked to stainless steel to finish fermentation to dryness. Malolactic fermentation occurs in seasoned, neutral French oak, and the wine is left on its lees for a month before barrel aging for 4–5 months, followed by filtration and bottling. Tasting notes Pale apricot in hue, with a palate that is rich, sinewy, and textural. Aromatic layers of marmalade, stone fruit, and gentle spice unfold beautifully. Finely grained for a skin-contact wine, it is best served slightly chilled to highlight its delicate texture. Food match Pairs wonderfully with Hawaiian pizzas, Vietnamese ginger dishes, pan-fried pear and cumin
