The Fernando de Castilla Antique Pedro Ximénez is an intensely rich and luscious sweet sherry from DO Jerez-Xérès-Sherry, aged for over 20 years. With its deep mahogany-black colour and concentrated sweetness, it offers layers of dried fruit, coffee, liquorice, and subtle tobacco notes. Winner of Best Sweet Fortified at the 2019 Wines from Spain Awards, this PX is indulgent yet surprisingly drinkable.
Meet the Producer
Bodegas Rey Fernando de Castilla, located in the historic centre of Jerez, was founded by the aristocratic Andrada-Vanderwilde family. The winery specialises in premium, artisanal sherries made from individual soleras, bottled without blending, cold stabilisation, or filtration to preserve the wine’s subtlety and purity.
Production
Pedro Ximénez grapes are harvested and sun-dried for up to 2 days in September. Fortification and extended ageing in solera barrels concentrate the wine’s sugars and flavours, raising the initial 300 g/L sugar content to around 450 g/L. Over 20–30 years, the colour deepens from dark mahogany to intense black, developing extraordinary complexity while maintaining elegance. Bottled in clear glass to showcase its rich colour, the Antique PX is a true premium expression.
Tasting Notes
Expect a dramatic and intense PX, with aromas of prunes, figs, raisins, coffee, tea, sweet tobacco, and liquorice. Despite the richness (over 500 g/L sugar), it is remarkably light and delicate on the palate. Luscious, seductive and complex, it is a PX that is both powerful and eminently drinkable.
Food Pairing
Serve slightly chilled at 10–12°C. Perfect with chocolates, chocolate-based desserts, ice cream, pastries, or certain cheeses.
Evidence boundary
This page combines the recorded bottle identity with linked source records. An exact region-name match supplies regional context but does not prove that this bottle carries the protected designation. A vineyard is only shown as bottle-level evidence when a wine-to-vineyard link exists. BottlePicker does not infer a vineyard, soil or site climate from a retailer title.
