The Story of Camel Valley : From RAF Dreams to Award-Winning English Wines In 1989, former RAF pilot Bob Lindo and his wife Annie planted their first 8,000 vines on the sun-soaked slopes of the Camel Valley in the heart of Cornwall . What began as a bold new chapter in their post-service life soon blossomed into one of the UK’s most celebrated English wine success stories. After purchasing their farm to raise a young family, Bob and Annie initially raised sheep and cattle. But each summer, as they watched the grass dry on the vineyard's sun-drenched slopes, they wondered if grapevines might thrive there instead. Driven by curiosity and ambition, Bob traveled to Germany to “do a vintage,” gaining firsthand winemaking experience. Together, they took viticulture courses, devoured every book they could find, and built a state-of-the-art winery equipped with the best tools they could afford. The early years were challenging—every task was done by hand, and harvests meant long nights of hard work. Annie recalls:“We practically lived in the vineyard. It was just us and a few friends picking grapes, and Bob would stay up all night crushing them. But we loved it.” Their dedication paid off when Camel Valley's first vintage won a medal in the national English Wine competition, validating their pursuit of excellence.
