La Gitana is one of Spain’s most iconic sherries, capturing the unique character of Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Its name and historic label have made it one of the country’s best-known and most widely enjoyed Manzanillas.
Meet the Producer
Founded in 1792, Bodegas Hidalgo-La Gitana remains family-owned and is among the oldest sherry producers in Sanlúcar. With extensive vineyards in the prized Jerez Superior district, the bodega has built a reputation for quality and authenticity, with La Gitana being its flagship wine.
Production
La Gitana is produced from Palomino grapes grown in the chalky albariza soils of the Balbaina and Miraflores vineyards. Only free-run juice is used, fermented naturally with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel. The wine is fortified to 15% ABV before entering the traditional solera system , aging in American oak casks under a veil of yeast ( flor ). Thanks to Sanlúcar’s unique coastal climate, the flor thrives year-round, giving Manzanilla its distinctive lightness, freshness, and saline character.
Tasting Notes
Pale straw in colour, La Gitana is bone-dry and refreshing, with flavours of green apple, chamomile, almond, and straw, lifted by a subtle sea-breeze salinity. It is delicate and balanced, with a tangy finish that invites another sip. Food match Best served well chilled in a white wine glass. A superb aperitif and the perfect partner to tapas, fresh seafood, fried fish, mild cheeses, and salted nuts. Grape 100% Palomino Fino
Evidence boundary
This page combines the recorded bottle identity with linked source records. An exact region-name match supplies regional context but does not prove that this bottle carries the protected designation. A vineyard is only shown as bottle-level evidence when a wine-to-vineyard link exists. BottlePicker does not infer a vineyard, soil or site climate from a retailer title.
