Montecalvo Aglianico is a vibrant and characterful red wine from the chalky clay hills of Benevento in Campania , southern Italy . Made entirely from Aglianico, one of southern Italy's most noble and ancient grape varieties, it is crafted by Montecalvo, a large cooperative of around 1,000 members founded in 1960, with 1,800 hectares of sustainably farmed vineyards across the region.

Why You'll Love It

Aglianico is often called the Barolo of the south, and for good reason. It produces wines of real depth, structure and personality, and Montecalvo's version delivers all of that at an outstanding price. Sustainably produced, vegetarian and vegan-friendly, this is a wine you can feel good about drinking. Fleshy, juicy and full of dark fruit character, it is as versatile at the table as it is enjoyable on its own. Vineyard and Production The 100% Aglianico grapes are cultivated in the chalky clay soils of the Benevento hills in Campania, a terroir that gives the variety its characteristic structure, acidity and dark fruit intensity. The vineyards are farmed sustainably, reflecting Montecalvo's long-standing commitment to responsible viticulture across its extensive estate.

Tasting Notes

Intense dark fruit aromas with savoury hints on the nose. The palate is fleshy and generous, with bramble and plum characters, ripe tannins and a juicy, lively acidity that keeps the wine fresh and engaging from first sip to last.

Perfect Pairings

A natural partner for bold, flavoursome dishes. Excellent with barbecued beef, rich tomato pasta dishes, slow-braised lamb or a hearty meat ragu. Also great alongside aged hard cheeses or a classic Italian charcuterie board.

Evidence boundary

This page combines the recorded bottle identity with linked source records. An exact region-name match supplies regional context but does not prove that this bottle carries the protected designation. A vineyard is only shown as bottle-level evidence when a wine-to-vineyard link exists. BottlePicker does not infer a vineyard, soil or site climate from a retailer title.
