Montes Purple Angel is an iconic expression of Carménère from the Colchagua Valley, Chile, crafted from grapes grown in the estate’s Apalta and Marchigüe vineyards, where steep slopes, deep soils, and cool ocean breezes allow slow ripening and optimal retention of varietal aromas and acidity. The grapes are hand-harvested into small trays, cold-soaked for seven days, then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for 12–15 days, followed by extended skin contact to enhance colour and structure. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (80% new, 20% one-year-old), and a small addition of Petit Verdot adds spice, structure, and depth, resulting in a rich, elegant wine with vibrant colour, expressive fruit, and a balanced finish.

Meet the Producer

Montes, established in 1988 by Aurelio Montes, Douglas Murray, Alfredo Vidaurre, and Pedro Grand, is recognised for meticulous viticulture and winemaking, producing wines that consistently reflect the finest terroirs of Chile.

Production

Grapes are hand-picked into 10kg trays, cold-soaked for seven days, and fermented in stainless steel tanks with controlled temperature. Extended maceration enhances colour and tannin structure, and the wine undergoes 18 months of aging in French oak barrels, with Petit Verdot incorporated into the final blend to refine structure and add aromatic complexity.

Tasting Notes

Deep crimson red in colour, with aromas of blackberries, blueberries, dried plum, candied fruit, and subtle notes of nutmeg, sweet spice, vanilla, and pastry. The palate is well-structured, with rich tannins, balanced acidity, and a long, lingering finish. Food match Pairs perfectly with roasted or grilled red meats, hearty stews, and mature cheeses. Grape Carménère 92%, Petit Verdot 8%

Evidence boundary

This page combines the recorded bottle identity with linked source records. An exact region-name match supplies regional context but does not prove that this bottle carries the protected designation. A vineyard is only shown as bottle-level evidence when a wine-to-vineyard link exists. BottlePicker does not infer a vineyard, soil or site climate from a retailer title.
