Meet the Producer
Established in 1919, Domaine Papagiannakos lies in the heart of the Mesogaia plain in Attica, just 30km from Athens. Now run by the third generation of the family, the estate is renowned for its modern interpretation of traditional Greek wines, highlighting both indigenous varieties and unique local styles.
Production
Made from 100% Savatiano grapes grown in Markopoulo, Attica. The Retsina style dates back centuries, originating from the practice of sealing wine jars with resin to protect the contents. At Papagiannakos, after classic white wine vinification begins, carefully measured amounts of Aleppo pine resin—sourced from the nearby Kouvras forest—are placed in cotton bags and suspended in cooled stainless steel tanks. The resin is removed once the perfect balance of flavour has been achieved, a family secret passed down through generations.
Tasting Notes
Balanced, fresh, and refined, this Retsina captures sweet pine, rosemary, and thyme aromas alongside zesty citrus notes. On the palate, pine character is lifted by bright lemon and herbal freshness, with weight and texture from old-vine Savatiano. Clean, refreshing, and full of character without being overly tannic or resinous. Food match Superb with pan-fried fish, grilled lamb, pork meatballs or braised fennel. A versatile partner to both seafood and rich Mediterranean dishes. Region/Country Attika, Greece Grape
Evidence boundary
This page combines the recorded bottle identity with linked source records. An exact region-name match supplies regional context but does not prove that this bottle carries the protected designation. A vineyard is only shown as bottle-level evidence when a wine-to-vineyard link exists. BottlePicker does not infer a vineyard, soil or site climate from a retailer title.
