Drink it now or cellar for up to 20 years. It is recommended to decant it for an hour. Founded in 1927 by 11 Ribera del Duero winemakers, Protos is a Spanish winery located in Peñafiel, Valladolid. The estate's vineyards cover approximately 100 hectares in an area characterized by a Mediterranean climate with continental influences, benefiting from significant temperature variations. In 2012, Bodegas Protos was awarded Winery of the Year by Wine & Spirits magazine. Protos Gran Reserva is a red from the Ribera del Duero, produced exclusively with Tinta del País grapes, sourced from vineyards that are over 60 years old, on plots located near the Duero River, on predominantly sandy, calcareous soils. After manual selection, harvesting, and fermentation, the finished wine ages in oak barrels for two years and a further three years in the bottle. The result is an elegant and harmonious wine, deep and mature, revealing a broad aromatic profile with notes of red fruit jam, plum, and blackberry, hints of bitter cocoa and tobacco, over a mineral and smoky background. On the palate, it is soft, round, and generous, with silky tannins and a smooth texture. The finish is long, persistent, and expressive. Try it with braised wild boar, pheasant stew, or aged cheeses.
Evidence boundary
This page combines the recorded bottle identity with linked source records. An exact region-name match supplies regional context but does not prove that this bottle carries the protected designation. A vineyard is only shown as bottle-level evidence when a wine-to-vineyard link exists. BottlePicker does not infer a vineyard, soil or site climate from a retailer title.
