San Marzano ‘Collezione Cinquanta’ is a rich and full-bodied red from Puglia, this wine offers generous flavours of dark berries, chocolate, and warm spice, all woven into a smooth, lingering finish. Fleshy and well-structured, it showcases the best of southern Italy’s red varieties. About the Producer Founded in 1962 by 19 local vine growers, Cantine San Marzano has grown to unite over 1,200 producers across Puglia. Combining traditional winemaking with modern techniques, the cooperative produces wines that capture the essence of the region while expressing each variety’s unique character. In 2022, it was awarded Cooperative Winery of the Year by Gambero Rosso. Vineyard The grapes come from Salento, Puglia, at around 100 metres above sea level. The warm summer temperatures encourage even ripening, while the clay soils with scattered rocks provide excellent drainage. The vines are over 50 years old, trained as gnarly bush vines, and planted at a density of 4,500 vines per hectare. The Primitivo is sourced from Manduria, one of Puglia’s most highly regarded areas. Grapes are hand-harvested in September when slightly overripe, maximizing flavour concentration.
Winemaking
After hand-harvesting, the grapes were destemmed, crushed, and cold macerated before fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Gentle pressing followed, and malolactic fermentation in stainless steel helped soften the wine. It was then matured for 12 months in French oak barrels to develop complexity, richness, and structure.
Tasting Notes
Generous and fleshy, with dark berry fruit layered with chocolate and subtle spice. Smooth and balanced, the wine delivers a long, persistent finish with purity of fruit and a velvety texture.
