Southern Right Pinotage is a refined expression of South Africa’s iconic grape variety, grown on a striking 448-hectare property in the cool, maritime Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The vineyards benefit from clay-rich soils and proximity to the South Atlantic, which impart structure, minerality, and elegance. The wine undergoes 100% malolactic fermentation and is aged for nine months in 400-litre French oak barrels of mixed first to fourth fill, creating a subtle integration of oak and fruit.

Meet the Producer

Southern Right specializes in Pinotage and Sauvignon Blanc, crafting wines that combine classic varietal character with a modern, refined style. The estate is named after the rare Southern Right whales that frequent Walker Bay, just three kilometres from the vineyards.

Production

Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented to retain natural complexity and balance. The Pinotage undergoes 100% malolactic fermentation and is matured for nine months in 400-litre French oak barrels (8% first fill, 8% second, 16% third, 68% fourth fill), allowing a soft, fine-grained tannin structure while preserving bright fruit and varietal expression.

Tasting Notes

Deep, intense ruby in colour, with a complex bouquet of berry fruit, subtle spice, and hints of violet and vanilla. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with fine tannins, layered dark fruit, and a lingering, elegant finish. The clay soils contribute structure and minerality, giving a distinctive, classic Pinotage character. Food match Pairs beautifully with smoked duck, pulled pork, spiced dishes, or traditional South African Braai (barbecue). Grape Pinotage 100%

Evidence boundary

This page combines the recorded bottle identity with linked source records. An exact region-name match supplies regional context but does not prove that this bottle carries the protected designation. A vineyard is only shown as bottle-level evidence when a wine-to-vineyard link exists. BottlePicker does not infer a vineyard, soil or site climate from a retailer title.
