Brocha Vineyards is a boutique estate in the cool Elgin district, where stony, north-facing slopes provide the ideal balance of warmth and aridity for authentic, sustainable viticulture. Owned by Rozy Gunn, the estate combines 10 ha of vines producing One Man Band and Solace, 15 ha of conserved fynbos, and 5 ha of pasture for Nguni cattle. This integrated approach reflects Rozy’s philosophy that a farm should harmonise agriculture, natural vegetation, and livestock to function as a healthy, independent ecosystem. As she says, “Small is beautiful, natural is best.” Viticulture This red blend showcases the best red grapes from Brocha Vineyards, combining ripe Syrah from the lower slopes of the Elgin Valley with other varietals from higher vineyards overlooking the Atlantic. The wine is crafted to be unique to the property, reflecting the character and diversity of the estate’s terroir.

Winemaking

Grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, and sorted on a vibrating table, then left uncrushed. Wild fermentation is encouraged, with gentle punch-downs of the skin cap twice daily to achieve balanced extraction. After fermentation, the wine undergoes extended maceration, with regular tastings to determine optimal press-off. The wine then completes spontaneous malolactic fermentation in 500 L French oak barrels, 20–25% of which are new, and is aged for 16 to 18 months. Tasting Note This vintage displays cool-climate peppery spice and firm, grippy tannins, layered with bramble and black cherry fruit. It is structured, expressive, and unmistakably Elgin in style.
