Meet the Producer

Fonseca is one of the most respected Port houses in the Douro Valley, renowned for its Vintage and Reserve Ports. The winery works closely with its own vineyards and trusted independent growers, blending traditional Douro viticulture with meticulous cellar techniques to produce iconic Ports of depth and character.

Production

Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and undergo fermentation and maceration before aging in oak vats. Vintage Ports are bottled after a brief period of maturation, allowing the wine to develop complexity and structure while retaining freshness. Fonseca Guimaraens is ready to age further in the bottle, offering long-term cellaring potential.

Tasting Notes

Opaque purple-black in the centre with a thin purple edge, the nose is classic Fonseca, revealing dense woodland fruits, blackberries, and blackcurrants, layered with mint, balsamic herbs, and subtle resinous notes. Hints of exotic wood, liquorice, and black pepper add depth and complexity. The palate is full-bodied with tightly-woven tannins, structured around a core of dark berry fruit, complemented by plummy and raspberry flavours. The long, luscious finish is fresh and lifted, demonstrating finesse and power.
